Bulk Sorbents

"Bulk" is the term used by chemical producers to signify product that is loose or in its original manufactured form. IMPAK is a leader in prepackaged desiccants, in capsule form, small sachets from .25 grams, filter units and even large 1 lb and 5 lb bags.

Silica gel is available in "plain", often referred to as white, although it is actually clear and indicating. Indicating silica gel has been impregnated with cobalt chloride which turns from blue to pink or a dusty rose when the product has reached its limit of adsorption capacity.

We can provide silica gel, both indicating and non-indicating, molecular sieves and other sorbents in containers from 1 lb aluminum cans to 55 gallon drums.

Indicating Molecular Sieve

Molecular sieve also known as synthetic sodium alumina silicate is a unique adsorbent with very unique pore structure. This product can be developed so that differentiation in actual pore openings is as small as one angstrom. (1 angstrom = 1/1000 of a human hair) It is by far the best choice in terms of desiccant for companies looking to maintain the lowest possible relative humidity. The vast majority of molecular sieve that is produced has no has indicating feature. However, Impak Corporation has the capability of producing indicating molecular sieve.

Unlike its similarly named chemical cousin, indicating silica gel, which turns from blue to pink as it becomes saturated moisture indicating molecular sieve turns from blue to “not blue.” As you can see in the picture (right and below) its change goes from a blue color back to the original beige.

3A (pore size 3 Å): Adsorbs NH₃, H₂O, (not C₂H₆), good for drying polar liquids.

4A (pore size 4 Å): Adsorbs H₂O, CO₂, SO₂, H₂S, C₂H₄, C₂H₆, C₃H₆, EtOH. Will not adsorb C₃H₈ and higher hydrocarbons. Good for drying nonpolar liquids and gases.

5A (pore size 5Å): Adsorbs normal (linear) hydrocarbons to n-C₄H₁₀, alcohols to C₄H₉OH, mercaptans to C₄H₉SH. Will not adsorb isocompounds or rings greater than C₄.

10X (pore size 8 Å): Adsorbs branched hydrocarbons and aromatics. Useful for drying gases.

13X (pore size 10 Å): Adsorbs di-n-butylamine (not tri-n-buylamine.) Useful for drying HMPA

Montmorillonite Clay

Montmorillonite is a relatively rare segment of the bentonite family with superior adsorption characteristics at low relative humidity. Even at 80% RH, it can pick up (adsorb) as much as 27% of its weight.
